In 1968, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada sent three couples, who were his disciples, to London to try and establish a temple of Krishna in the city. The devotees happened to meet George Harrison, a member of the famous Beatles band. George informed Śyāmasundara Dasa, that John Lennon and he had bought and heard the Hare Krishna mantra record sung by Srila Prabhupada when they were in America. He said that he was looking for them (the Hare Krishna devotees) ever since and that he was glad that he was able to meet them here in London.

He offered to help the devotees by recording an album for the devotees. The result was, “The Radha Krishna Temple” which topped the European “Top of the Pops” for at least three weeks and remained in the top twenty for more than a year. The album, which was released in 1969, proved to be a rage all over Europe. The album was released on Apple Records, which was owned by the Beatles but George made such an arrangement that all the profits would go to the Hare Krishna devotees. This enabled the devotees to establish the first Radha-Krishna temple in London.

When Prabhupada heard the first song of the album, “Govindam ādi Purusam tam aham bhajāmi” sung by Yamuna Dasi, he appreciated it very much and instructed that the song be played every morning in all the temples of ISKCON.

In Germany the hit single, “Hare Krishna Mantra,” had made it to the third position on the pop charts. Prabhupada commented, “I have seen the list of “Hare Krishna Mantra” record distribution and I am surprised to see that Germany alone has taken 57,000 records. Therefore we should open more branches in Germany immediately.”

All the songs in this album are sung by the devotees of the London Hare Krishna center and music was composed by George Harrison in his own recording studio. The record was instrumental in attracting many people to take shelter of Radha and Krishna, the divine couple. So please listen to it and enjoy.
