If the soul exists, where is the soul exactly located in the body?

Answer by Niraj Bidawatka:

The soul is located in the region of the heart. Along with the soul the Supersoul, or God is also sitting.

This is confirmed by Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita (18.61): “hrd-dese arjuna tistathi“. Krishna says, “Oh Arjuna, the Supersoul (ishvar) is situated in the region of the heart (hrd-deshe).

One may argue that this verse of the Bhagavad Gita mentions only about the location of the Supersoul and no specific reference is made to the location of the soul. This doubt may be addressed as follows:

The Mundaka Upanisad states: dva suparna sayuja sakhaya – the Soul and the Supersoul are sitting closely together like two good friends within the body.

two birds on a tree

One bird (the soul) is eating the fruits and the other (Supersoul) is silently witnessing. We the souls, are engaged in karma and eating the fruits (good and bad) of our karma, whereas God is observing all our activities and accordingly gives us the results, or fruits, sweet or bitter, as the case may be.

Since the soul and the Supersoul are sitting closely together, if the location of the Supersoul is known, the position of the soul is automatically known. Thus the Bhagavad Gita’s above mentioned sloka is enough to understand that the soul is located in the region of heart.

One more pertinent point is the specific use of the words, “in the region of the heart”. It does not state – “within the heart”.

Therefore even if the heart is transplanted, the soul is not transplanted. Why? Because the soul does not stay within the heart – It is situated in the “region” of the heart.
