Rupa Goswami says that if one engages one’s tongue in the service of the Lord, then one can easily understand Krishna, the Supreme Lord. [sevonmukhe hi jihvadau savayam eve sphuraty adah – Bhakti Rasāmrita Sindhu 1.2.234]
The tongue should be engaged in in the service of the Lord by constantly chanting the Hare Krishna mantra and by eating food which is first offered to Krishna. If one ensures that the tongue eats only Krishna prasadam* and nothing else, one will make quick progress on the path of spiritual realization. You can experience this for yourself.
Before eating, just offer your food to Krishna with love. There are no hard and fast rules in offering your food to Krishna. There is just one rule – it should be offered with love. After offering your food to Krishna, you can honour (eat) it. Such food, which is first offered to Krishna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, becomes spiritualized and thus has the power to cleanse your subtle body. Once your subtle body is gradually cleansed, you will automatically understand the Absolute Truth.
[Based on the teachings of His Divine Grace A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda]
*Sanctified food, which is first offered to Krishna, is known as prasadam

You said that there is one rule in offering food to Krishna; that it should be offered with love. But this is only half of the picture. Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura explains that He will accept that which is both *prepared* and *offered* with love and devotion. Hence why we cannot offer food made by nondevotees (that includes factory-made food from the store) and expect Krishna to accept it.

Dear Sukhi Bhakta prabhu,
If the food is offered with love (even though prepared by a non-devotee) Krishna will accept it. Prabhupada says, “Krishna can digest everything, including fire.”
If one keeps offering foodstuffs to Krishna with love, Krishna will give him the necessary information and intelligence to prepare food with pure ingredients.
Hare Krishna.

Please accept my best wishes. You have a beautiful site, very Krsna Consciousness.
I agree with your above statement:
…There are no hard and fast rules in offering your food to Krishna. There is just one rule – it should be offered with love.
It is the love and affection that is the main ingredient and which gives prasadam its special taste and quality.
